Modern History Excursion
On Tuesday, our Modern History students travelled to Brisbane to attend the
Queensland Holocaust Museum. The students had a wonderful time.
The students had the honour of meeting and speaking with Mr Peter Baruch
who fled Poland with his parents when he was only 2 years old. A photo is
shown of him holding a blanket that his mother wrapped him in as they fled
which was originally made by his grandfather. Mr Baruch, his mother and
father were the only members of his family who survived the Holocaust, all
other members of his family were killed. One of the students stated to Miss
Bansgrove ‘speaking to a survivor of the Holocaust was very interesting, it was
cool to hear it first hand as he explained it – that’s had a big impact on me’.
After speaking with Mr Baruch, the students observed artefacts in the
museum itself such as the Star of David that was placed on Jewish clothing, the striped jackets worn in concentration camps and objects used for
propaganda. The day concluded with a workshop where students were able to unpack the 10 stages of genocide.
Students thoroughly loved seeing the artefacts commenting it was certainly a much better experience to see them in person than through use
of technology. All students took away a different experience and learning from the day, several students in particular enjoyed reading the list of
names of survivors who made it safely to Queensland.
Thank you Miss Bansgrove and Miss Barkle for a wonderful excursion.
