Murgon State High School

Located in the Education District of Wide Bay, Murgon State High School services the communities of Murgon, Wondai, Cherbourg, Goomeri and Proston. Murgon State High School opened in 1945 and is currently a band 9 school. Murgon could be considered somewhat remote due to its distance from a major city but the restrictions usually associated by remoteness are overcome by the enthusiastic teaching staff, the wide range of learning opportunities presented to students and the high level of ICT integrated into everyday curriculum.

The majority of the students come from a rural background. Employment opportunities of the district mostly revolve around the diverse rural industries and associated secondary industries. The Bjelke Petersen Dam has provided new ventures that include viticulture and olive plantations. Tourism is predicted to be the growth industry in the next five years. Murgon State High School is actively developing student involvement in these new industries through the Gateway to Wineries School program.
